M97 will be opening the “Hokkaido to Huangshan” solo exhibition by Michael Kenna on March 17th from 4-6pm. Showing March 17th – April 29th. (see press release)

Ofoto gallery is home to Daniele Dainelli’s “Domestic Archeology“ until March 23. On March 24th artists Chen Nong & Wang Tong will open their exhibit “Re-Reenactment”

Shanghai Photography Studio Rental & other advice

After spending 4 years in Shanghai, I’d like to share some local knowledge with other photographers who are visiting the city. It’s a great place to work, and in this post I’ll share some of the need to know info for your visit.

First, if you’ve left any vital equipment at home, and you need to pick up something new, you can head to the Xin Guang Photographic Equipment City (星光摄影器材城) on the corner of Luban road & Xietu Road. They’ve got all the latest digital cameras, lenses, & accessories. If you’re looking for any good deals on equipment, don’t expect to find them in China. Most photography gear retails for the same price as it does in Europe or North America, but here you have the added fun of “bargaining” with the retailers. Expect your first price inquiry to be at least 30% higher than what they will actually sell it to you for. Keep the exchange rate in mind or you may end up paying more than you would back home. (March 2012 update: light stands, while not really feasible to be purchased and shipped, are considerably cheaper)

If you’re looking for medium format cameras, forget about Xing Guang. There’s a hasselblad service centre in town though, where you can rent bodies & lenses, and I believe they also have elinchrom lights for rent as well. They are located at # 142 Guang Dong road near Jiang Xi road. (广东路142号，近江西路哈苏数码服务中心). You’ll want to get in touch with Olive Sun, who is their english speaking rep. Phone: +86 021 63210258

Another place you can check for high end equipment rental is Zenith Digital , Studio 1, & Central Studios. They also have studio space available.

Rimagine Studio and JK Studio also have space for rent in Jing An district, and in Xujiahui there is The Junction.

Lastly, if you’d like to do some printing or scan some film, I recommend no one else but Sissy Yang at PX2. They seem to be one of the only print shops in Shanghai who actually know what an .icc profile is and the importance of colour accuracy. Printing in China is much cheaper than Europe & North America, and if you’ve got a day or two to wait for a print, you’ll save some cash.

After a long day of shooting, you can wind things down with a few drinks at one of the many bars in Shanghai. For great advice on what’s happening where, be sure to check out Smart Shanghai . If you’d like a nice sit down bar to go over any final business with your clients, my recommendations are El Coctel (be sure to call ahead for a table), or Constellation 2 (fully stocked whiskey bar with a nice atmosphere).

Now that the Spring Festival holiday has ended it’s time to get out of the apartment and check out some photography shows. You’ll need to move quickly as 2 of these shows will be closing soon.

I ♥ Fuji 100x & Subways of Shanghai

Over my past five years in Shanghai one of the places that I’ve consistently been drawn to photograph is the subway. With its current length stretching over 400Km, and 11 lines to choose from, there isn’t a corner of Shanghai which can go unexplored.
What brings me onto the topic of subways is my recent purchase of the the Fuji 100x. While you may argue that I’m just falling for Loaded magazines line “the thinking man’s camera” (actually listed on the x100 site) and the retro design, it was the title of Chase Jarvis’ book “The best camera is the one that’s with you” which helped me decide.

I have gotten out of the habit of carrying my DSLR around town, it was just too cumbersome. Throwing the baby out with the bathwater, I also stopped taking photos as I walked around. Well: No longer. I’m happy to present the first photo in what will soon be expanding into a broader essay of the Shanghai subway, and the stories that unfold there.
