The route: Ten 60-minute expeditions shot across 2019: the Philippines, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mongolia, Taiwan, Kyrgyzstan, Thailand, India and Hong Kong — where the season closed on the 100 km MacLehose Trail, from Ham Tin Beach over Sharp Peak to Lion Rock. Premiered on Discovery Channel across Asia-Pacific in June 2020. The work: A three-person field unit — host, cinematographer, camera operator — delivering broadcast-hour 4K coverage at trekking pace. Landscape architecture on long lenses, verité story coverage on the move, aerials wherever the airspace allowed. Logistics: Ten countries' worth of carnets, filming permits and drone clearances in a single production year, from Kyrgyz high country to Hong Kong's geopark — the paperwork mapped before the flights, so no border ever cost a shoot day. Quoted: "TEN COUNTRIES IN A SINGLE PRODUCTION YEAR." (PRODUCTION NOTES) Outcome: 10 EPISODES · 4K; 10 COUNTRIES IN ONE PRODUCTION YEAR; DISCOVERY APAC Credits: CINEMATOGRAPHER — CHAD INGRAHAM; HOST / PRODUCER — RYAN PYLE; CAMERA OPERATOR — JESSE ROSENBERG; PRODUCTION — RYAN PYLE PRODUCTIONS / DISCOVERY Trailer: https://vimeo.com/1209901060/a8392c24ca (1:41) Where to watch: WATCH THE SERIES ON TUBI — https://tubitv.com/series/300000350/expedition-asia ### EXTREME TREKS — SEASON 4 (2020–2021) URL: https://chadingraham.com/project/extreme-treks-s4/ Client / broadcaster: DISCOVERY ASIA / AMAZON PRIME Chad Ingraham's role: DIRECTOR OF PHOTOGRAPHY Category: Television Myanmar, Ethiopia, Switzerland, Poland — the season the pandemic interrupted, and the team finished anyway. The route: The final season: Myanmar, Ethiopia, a double episode in Switzerland, and Poland. Myanmar was shot in February 2020, Ethiopia that March — and then the world closed. The season was completed and released in late 2021. The work: A decade in, the discipline was fully formed: minimal kit chosen for weight-to-image ratio, coverage planned around weather windows, and a shooting rhythm that never held up the climb. Across four seasons the series took the camera to 16 countries. Logistics: The hardest production-management season of the run: borders closing mid-schedule, repatriation planning alongside shot lists, COVID protocols layered onto the usual carnets, permits and altitude power budgets — and every delivery deadline still met. Quoted: "THE MOUNTAIN DECIDES THE SCHEDULE. IN 2020, SO DID EVERYTHING ELSE." (PRODUCTION NOTES, SEASON 4) Outcome: 4 SEASONS COMPLETE; 16 COUNTRIES ACROSS THE SERIES; RELEASED 2021 — AMAZON PRIME Credits: DP — CHAD INGRAHAM; HOST — RYAN PYLE; PRODUCTION — RYAN PYLE PRODUCTIONS Trailer: https://vimeo.com/1209916621/f9bf417523 (1:01) Where to watch: WATCH THE SERIES ON TUBI — https://tubitv.com/series/300009619/extreme-treks ### EXTREME TREKS — SEASON 3 (2018) URL: https://chadingraham.com/project/extreme-treks-s3/ Client / broadcaster: BBC EARTH Chad Ingraham's role: DIRECTOR OF PHOTOGRAPHY · FIELD LOGISTICS Category: Television Eight countries, eight one-hour expeditions in 4K — and the Asian Academy Award for Best Cinematography. The route: Eight 60-minute episodes in a single production cycle: Russia, Iceland, Laos, Papua New Guinea, Bolivia, Argentina, Jordan and Uganda — from Elbrus's glaciers to tracking endangered mountain gorillas. Aired on BBC Earth in 2018, now on Amazon Prime. The work: Broadcast-hour 4K coverage from a unit moving at trekking pace. Every frame earned twice — once by the legs, once by the light. Long-lens landscapes, verité climbing coverage, and aerials flown in whatever weather the mountain allowed. Logistics — the producer side: The part a DP doesn't usually own: ATA Carnet paperwork shepherding a full camera package through eight customs regimes without a single impound; drone import and flight permits negotiated per country; lithium battery transport compliance across a dozen flights; power budgets for two weeks off-grid; fixers, porters and evac insurance arranged before a single frame was possible. Recognition: Chad's photography on this season won Best Cinematography at the 2021 Asian Academy Creative Awards — the craft prize of the run, alongside the series' recognition for direction and presenting. Quoted: "GETTING THE CAMERA THERE INTACT IS HALF THE CINEMATOGRAPHY." (PRODUCTION NOTES, SEASON 3) Outcome: ASIAN ACADEMY AWARD — BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY; 8 COUNTRIES · 8 EPISODES · 4K; ZERO GEAR IMPOUNDS, ZERO LOST SHOOT DAYS Credits: DP / FIELD LOGISTICS — CHAD INGRAHAM; HOST — RYAN PYLE; NETWORK — BBC EARTH Trailer: https://vimeo.com/1209893590/1ed448440d (1:02) Where to watch: WATCH THE SERIES ON TUBI — https://tubitv.com/series/300009619/extreme-treks ### EXTREME TREKS — SEASON 2 (2017) URL: https://chadingraham.com/project/extreme-treks-s2/ Client / broadcaster: BBC EARTH Chad Ingraham's role: DIRECTOR OF PHOTOGRAPHY Category: Television Eight countries on four continents — the season the series went global, and went 4K. The route: The season the series broke out of Asia: eight one-hour expeditions across Tanzania, Morocco, China, the USA, Peru, Nepal, Italy and Oman. First season delivered in 4K, aired on BBC Earth in 2017. The work: Cinematography at altitude and across climates — desert light in Oman and Morocco, alpine weather in Italy, Andean and Himalayan trekking coverage — one visual language held across four continents. Logistics: Eight countries of expedition permits and peak fees, guide and porter teams per mountain, acclimatization schedules built into the shoot plan, and gear split between what summits and what stays — production management as much as photography. Quoted: "THE MOUNTAIN DECIDES THE SCHEDULE. THE CAMERA JUST HAS TO BE READY." (FIELD NOTES) Outcome: 8 COUNTRIES · 4 CONTINENTS; FIRST 4K SEASON; BBC EARTH · AMAZON PRIME Credits: DP — CHAD INGRAHAM; HOST — RYAN PYLE; NETWORK — BBC EARTH Trailer: https://vimeo.com/1209893573/505ec8f598 (1:02) Where to watch: WATCH THE SERIES ON TUBI — https://tubitv.com/series/300009619/extreme-treks ### EXTREME TREKS — SACRED MOUNTAINS (2014) URL: https://chadingraham.com/project/extreme-treks-s1/ Client / broadcaster: DISCOVERY CHANNEL Chad Ingraham's role: DIRECTOR OF PHOTOGRAPHY Category: Television Where it started — four sacred mountains of Tibet and western China, trekked and filmed on foot. The route: Four one-hour pilgrimages in the high country of Tibet, Sichuan, Qinghai and Yunnan: the kora around Mt. Kailash, Minya Konka in the summer monsoon, the circumnavigation of Amne Machin across Qinghai grasslands, and — saved for last — Kawa Karpo's five high passes and river gorges. Aired on Discovery Channel in 2014. The work: The season that set the series' visual law: the landscape carries the architecture of the frame, the climb carries the story, and nothing is staged that the mountain didn't offer. Chad's Tibet stills archive and this season share a bloodline. Logistics: Filming permissions in Tibet and restricted western regions — some of the hardest paperwork in television — plus monastery and community consents, and the diplomacy of pointing a camera at the sacred, earned at walking pace. Quoted: "PILGRIMS PROSTRATING AROUND MT. KAILASH." (TIBET, FIELD NOTES) Outcome: 4 SACRED-MOUNTAIN EXPEDITIONS; DISCOVERY CHANNEL · AMAZON PRIME; 3 FURTHER SEASONS COMMISSIONED Credits: DP — CHAD INGRAHAM; HOST — RYAN PYLE; PRODUCTION — RYAN PYLE PRODUCTIONS Trailer: https://vimeo.com/1209901095/bc4e468eca (3:24) Where to watch: WATCH THE SERIES ON TUBI — https://tubitv.com/series/300009619/extreme-treks ### TOUGH RIDES — CHINA (2010–2013) URL: https://chadingraham.com/project/tough-rides-china/ Client / broadcaster: TRAVEL CHANNEL / DISCOVERY Chad Ingraham's role: DIRECTOR OF PHOTOGRAPHY Category: Television A Guinness World Record on two wheels — 16,240 km around China in 65 days, filmed from 150 m below sea level to a 5,200 m pass. The route: A full loop out of Shanghai, autumn 2010: north to the North Korean border, across Inner Mongolia and Xinjiang — the Turpan Depression at 150 m below sea level, then the Karakoram Highway to a 5,200 m pass at the Pakistan border — down the G219 into Tibet past Lake Manasarovar, Everest Base Camp and Lhasa, and home through Shangri-La, Guizhou and Guilin. Certified by Guinness World Records as the longest continuous motorcycle journey within a single country: 16,240 km. The work: Ryan and Colin Pyle rode the BMW F800GSs; Chad filmed the entire journey from the support Land Cruiser — HD main camera, bike-mounted and helmet cameras, audio, and the nightly data wrangle into Pelican cases of hard drives. A road movie with no second takes on anything, cut into six episodes for Travel Channel (2013). Logistics: Sixty-five consecutive shooting days across every terrain China has — including the restricted far west and Tibet, where permissions are their own expedition. Camera power, storage and repairs planned like fuel stops; the production office lived in the truck. Quoted: "THE LONGEST CONTINUOUS MOTORCYCLE JOURNEY WITHIN A SINGLE COUNTRY." (GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS) Outcome: GUINNESS WORLD RECORD — 16,240 KM; 6 EPISODES · TRAVEL CHANNEL · PRIME; FRANCHISE LAUNCHED + BESTSELLING BOOK Credits: DP — CHAD INGRAHAM; RIDERS — RYAN & COLIN PYLE; BOOK — THE MIDDLE KINGDOM RIDE Trailer: https://vimeo.com/1209894147/f2636fc5b9 (3:58) Where to watch: WATCH THE SERIES ON TUBI — https://tubitv.com/series/300008182/tough-rides ### TOUGH RIDES — INDIA (2012–2014) URL: https://chadingraham.com/project/tough-rides-india/ Client / broadcaster: TRAVEL CHANNEL / AMAZON PRIME Chad Ingraham's role: DIRECTOR OF PHOTOGRAPHY Category: Television 14,000 km and 54 days around the subcontinent — India Gate to India Gate, through the monsoon. The route: Started and finished at India Gate, New Delhi, autumn 2012: north toward the Pakistan border and Amritsar, then anti-clockwise through Rajasthan, Mumbai, Kerala and Madurai, up the east coast to Kolkata and Darjeeling, and home — 14,000 km in 54 days, cut into six episodes airing from 2014. The work: India at street level and highway speed — the densest traffic on earth, monsoon light, passes above 16,000 feet, and a camera position that had to be ahead of the riders at every planned frame. Chad's India stills archive was shot in the gaps of this schedule. Logistics: Carnet de Passage for the bikes, equipment carnets for the kit, state-by-state permissions, monsoon contingency routing, and a daily calculus of distance, heat and where the next usable light would be. Quoted: "THE STILLS ARE THE DIARY THE SHOW COULDN'T HOLD." (FIELD NOTES, INDIA) Outcome: 14,000 KM · 54 DAYS; 6 EPISODES · TRAVEL CHANNEL · PRIME; COMPANION BOOK — THE INDIA RIDE Credits: DP — CHAD INGRAHAM; RIDERS — RYAN & COLIN PYLE Trailer: https://vimeo.com/1209894204/ec40098bb3 (5:59) Where to watch: WATCH THE SERIES ON TUBI — https://tubitv.com/series/300008182/tough-rides ### TOUGH RIDES — BRAZIL (2015–2016) URL: https://chadingraham.com/project/tough-rides-brazil/ Client / broadcaster: TRAVEL CHANNEL / AMAZON PRIME Chad Ingraham's role: MAIN CAMERAMAN / DP Category: Television 14,000 km from Copacabana, two days by boat up the Amazon, and 900 km of the 'Road of Ghosts'. The route: The trilogy's finale, ridden solo by Ryan in 2015: out of Copacabana Beach through Minas Gerais and Salvador, a two-day boat up the Amazon to Manaus, then roughly 900 km of the abandoned BR-319 — the 'Road of Ghosts' — before São Paulo, the Pedra do Baú climb and near-freezing Santa Catarina. Six episodes, premiering on Travel Channel in July 2016. The work: A four-person unit: rider, two camera operators (one doubling as driver), and a Brazilian fixer. Chad led camera — road coverage, extensive drone aerials over rainforest and coast, and a support truck full of camera gear that was winched out of the mud more than once. Logistics: Amazon river crossings with a full package, humidity management for gear that never truly dried, Portuguese-language fixing, and route contingencies for a road the map had officially given up on. Quoted: "MY MAIN CAMERAMAN, CHAD INGRAHAM, HAS BEEN WITH ME ON ALL OF MY PRODUCTIONS." (RYAN PYLE — TNT MAGAZINE, 2016) Outcome: TRILOGY COMPLETE; 6 EPISODES · TRAVEL CHANNEL · PRIME · TUBI; COMPANION BOOK PUBLISHED Credits: MAIN CAMERAMAN — CHAD INGRAHAM; RIDER / HOST — RYAN PYLE; PRODUCTION — RYAN PYLE PRODUCTIONS Trailer: https://vimeo.com/1209894133/705719f312 (1:07) Where to watch: WATCH THE SERIES ON TUBI — https://tubitv.com/series/300008182/tough-rides ### GRANNY KNOWS BEST 奶奶最懂得 (2019) URL: https://chadingraham.com/project/granny-knows-best/ Client / broadcaster: TENCENT VIDEO Chad Ingraham's role: DIRECTOR OF PHOTOGRAPHY Category: Television Sixteen grandmothers, eight provinces, an 8.9 on Douban — and 22 million views on Tencent. The route: Eight half-hour episodes across eight provinces — Anhui, Zhejiang, Sichuan, Yunnan, Guizhou, Guangxi, Fujian and Hainan. Mandarin-fluent British chef Jamie Bilbow learns 18 traditional dishes from 16 grandmothers who still cook the old way, then cooks a fusion meal for each in return. Co-produced by Tencent's Penguin Pictures and Ryan Pyle Productions, premiering October 2019. The work: Kitchens, courtyards and markets — small spaces, real people, and dishes that only get cooked once. Two cameras, available light first, and the food always shot like a hero. The audience agreed: 22 million-plus views and an 8.9 rating on Douban. Logistics: Eight provinces in one production, village access negotiated family by family, and a schedule built around harvest, market days and when grandmothers actually cook. Quoted: "NO SECOND TAKES ON A DISH THAT ONLY GETS COOKED ONCE." (PRODUCTION NOTES) Outcome: 8 EPISODES · 8 PROVINCES; 22M+ VIEWS · DOUBAN 8.9; COVERED BY GLOBAL TIMES Credits: DP — CHAD INGRAHAM; HOST — JAMIE BILBOW (大米); PRODUCTION — PENGUIN PICTURES / RYAN PYLE PRODUCTIONS Trailer: https://vimeo.com/1209893619/9438cc3519 (2:32) ### SMART CHINA (2016) URL: https://chadingraham.com/project/smart-china/ Client / broadcaster: DISCOVERY CHANNEL / CICC Chad Ingraham's role: DIRECTOR OF PHOTOGRAPHY Category: Television Supercapacitor trams, liquid-metal robots and light that carries data — China's tech revolution for Discovery. The subjects: A tram that recharges in ten seconds, visible-light communication thousands of times faster than Wi-Fi, liquid-metal robotics, autonomous driving, farm-to-table food tracing and the world's cleanest coal plant — engineering filmed with the same appetite for atmosphere as any mountain. Logistics: Access clearances for research labs, factory floors and prototype vehicles across multiple Chinese cities, coordinated between an international crew and state co-production partners. Quoted: "CHINA'S SMART REVOLUTION, FILMED FROM THE INSIDE." (DISCOVERY CHANNEL, 2016) Outcome: 3 EPISODES · DISCOVERY CHANNEL; HOUR CHINA PREMIERE, SEPT 2016; INTERNATIONAL DISTRIBUTION VIA TVF Credits: DP — CHAD INGRAHAM; HOST — JOSH KLEIN; CO-PRODUCTION — DISCOVERY / CICC Trailer: https://vimeo.com/1209891116/0231d823cf (1:52) ### SHAANXI: CHINA'S GREAT GATEWAY (2014) URL: https://chadingraham.com/project/shaanxi/ Client / broadcaster: DISCOVERY ASIA Chad Ingraham's role: CINEMATOGRAPHER Category: Television Two parts on the province where the Silk Road began — 2,000 years of gateway, meeting the 21st century. Context: A two-part journey through Shaanxi province with Ryan Pyle for Discovery Asia — the cradle of Chinese civilisation for more than two thousand years, home of the Terracotta Warriors and the starting point of the Silk Road, meeting its 21st-century self. The work: Heritage sites, working landscapes and modern city life shot to feel continuous with each other — one province, one visual language. The route: A homecoming shoot after twelve years working in China: 21,000 kilometres in 71 days, St. John's, Newfoundland to Victoria, BC, in the summer of 2016. Riders Ryan Pyle and Lu Fei rode; Chad and camera operator Daniel Milton followed, filming for Travel Channel China in cooperation with Destination Canada. The work: Motorcycles as the storytelling device — 'a nice way to share the feeling of travelling on the open road.' Drone, gimbal and time-lapse coverage cut both for broadcast and for Chinese social platforms, where landscape has to work with the sound off, in a feed, in seconds. Logistics: A cross-continental route plan balancing seasons, light and distance; deliverables versioned for Chinese platforms and formats — and, as CBC noted, a DP seeing much of his own country for the first time. Quoted: "THERE IS NO BETTER WAY TO SEE THIS COUNTRY THAN BY ROAD." The films: Single-subject short documentaries: herbalist and knowledge-keeper Cecelia Brooks of Soul Flower Herbals, and outdoorsman Andrew Cuthbertson of Second Nature Outdoors — with more to come. The work: Shot, cut and graded solo, with the same discipline as broadcast work. Make the familiar cinematic — no summits required. Quoted: "A PORTRAIT OF THIS PLACE, THROUGH THEIR EYES." Context: Assignment portraiture for Forbes, The Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg Businessweek, Fortune and Fast Company — including the first Forbes cover to feature a mainland-China entrepreneur. Challenge: Ten minutes with a CEO, a borrowed boardroom, one case of lights. The portrait has to hold a magazine cover regardless. Approach: One idea per frame. Build the light before the subject arrives, then spend every minute on the person, not the gear. Quoted: "THE FIRST TIME A MAINLAND CHINA ENTREPRENEUR HAD BEEN FEATURED ON THE COVER." (FORBES — JACK MA) Outcome: FORBES COVER; 40+ EDITORIAL CLIENTS; PUBLISHED WORLDWIDE Credits: PHOTOGRAPHER — CHAD INGRAHAM; CLIENTS — FORBES, WSJ, BLOOMBERG, FORTUNE, FAST COMPANY Trailer: https://vimeo.com/1209894023/2b13d34ae4 (1:25) ### TIBET & THE HIMALAYA (2008–2016) URL: https://chadingraham.com/project/tibet-stills/ Client / broadcaster: PERSONAL / TRAVEL Chad Ingraham's role: PHOTOGRAPHER Category: Stills Pilgrims, passes and prayer wheels — a decade of stills from the high plateau. Context: Personal work gathered across a decade of expeditions through Tibet, Nepal and the Himalaya — Kailash, Manassarovar, Lhasa. Challenge: Photograph faith and altitude without turning either into a postcard. Approach: Walk, wait, and shoot film when it counts. Portraits made at arm's length, landscapes made at 5,000 metres. Quoted: "PILGRIMS PROSTRATING AROUND MT. KAILASH." (TIBET, FIELD NOTES) Outcome: PERSONAL ARCHIVE; SELECTED FRAMES PUBLISHED Credits: PHOTOGRAPHER — CHAD INGRAHAM ### INDIA (2012–2016) URL: https://chadingraham.com/project/india-stills/ Client / broadcaster: PERSONAL / TRAVEL Chad Ingraham's role: PHOTOGRAPHER Category: Stills From the Ganges at Varanasi to roadside snack stalls — India at street level. Context: Stills made alongside the Tough Rides: India circumnavigation — two months of the country seen from the road. Quoted: "THE STILLS ARE THE DIARY THE SHOW COULDN'T HOLD." (FIELD NOTES) Outcome: PERSONAL ARCHIVE Credits: PHOTOGRAPHER — CHAD INGRAHAM ### 512 — THE SICHUAN EARTHQUAKE (2008) URL: https://chadingraham.com/project/sichuan-earthquake/ Client / broadcaster: NEWS / EDITORIAL Chad Ingraham's role: PHOTOGRAPHER · FILMMAKER Category: Documentary May 12, 2008 — documenting the Wenchuan earthquake's aftermath in Sichuan. Context: The magnitude-7.9 Wenchuan earthquake of May 12, 2008 killed tens of thousands of people and levelled towns across Sichuan province. Chad travelled into the affected region in the days that followed, photographing and filming the aftermath. The work: News-documentary coverage made with restraint: the destruction, the rescue effort, and the people living through it — recorded carefully, without spectacle. The stills from this coverage are in the gallery under Stills. Why it's here: The earliest serious documentary work in the portfolio, and the assignment that set the standard for everything after it: show up, work carefully, and let the frame carry the weight. Context: Branded work from the Shanghai years: a factory film for Antriol Furniture, a pair of process films on traditional nankeen indigo dyeing for Luru Home, and a long-form documentary-commercial for glass artist Ryan Staub's Shanghai Eco Glass. The work: Craft filmed as craft — process, hands and heat, shot documentary-style and cut to each brand's rhythm, from a 46-second factory promo to a 15-minute artist portrait. The point: Commercial clients get the same visual law as broadcast: real light, real process, nothing staged that the workshop didn't offer.
