TOUGH RIDES — INDIA

THE ROUTE

Started and finished at India Gate, New Delhi, autumn 2012: north toward the Pakistan border and Amritsar, then anti-clockwise through Rajasthan, Mumbai, Kerala and Madurai, up the east coast to Kolkata and Darjeeling, and home — 14,000 km in 54 days, cut into six episodes airing from 2014.

THE WORK

India at street level and highway speed — the densest traffic on earth, monsoon light, passes above 16,000 feet, and a camera position that had to be ahead of the riders at every planned frame. Chad's India stills archive was shot in the gaps of this schedule.

LOGISTICS

Carnet de Passage for the bikes, equipment carnets for the kit, state-by-state permissions, monsoon contingency routing, and a daily calculus of distance, heat and where the next usable light would be.
