CONTEXT
The magnitude-7.9 Wenchuan earthquake of May 12, 2008 killed tens of thousands of people and levelled towns across Sichuan province. Chad travelled into the affected region in the days that followed, photographing and filming the aftermath.
THE WORK
News-documentary coverage made with restraint: the destruction, the rescue effort, and the people living through it — recorded carefully, without spectacle. The stills from this coverage are in the gallery under Stills.
WHY IT'S HERE
The earliest serious documentary work in the portfolio, and the assignment that set the standard for everything after it: show up, work carefully, and let the frame carry the weight.
